The Harlem Renaissance was a period of artistic and intellectual growth during the 1920s that saw African American culture flourish like never before. Within this movement, poets had embraced the sonnet form to express their feelings of frustration, pride and longing for change. One example is Countee Cullen’s “From The Dark Tower,” which uses powerful imagery to explore the limitations that oppression has placed on black people in America (Cullen 1925). Similarly, Helene Johnson’s “Sonnet to a Negro in Harlem” speaks of racial injustice through an elegiac tone as it laments how much potential is being wasted because of systemic racism (Johnson 1926). Finally, Claude McKay’s “If We Must Die” conveys a message of resilience despite challenging times by encouraging readers to fight against racism with courage (McKay 1919).

All three poems employ various poetic devices such as metaphors and similes in order to convey their messages. For example, both Cullen and McKay make use of personification when speaking about oppressive forces such as \”the tyrant\” or \”the white man’s madness\” respectively; whereas Johnson paints vivid pictures using words like \”monsters\” in order talk about police brutality (Cullen 1925; McKay 1919; Johnson 1926). They also all employ rhyme schemes found within the traditional sonnet form allowing them to be read more fluently while facilitating easier memorization.

It appears that these poets were able to effectively utilize the sonnet form in order to communicate powerful messages regarding racial issues. Their use of various techniques allowed them to capture their experiences while remaining connected with readers who could identify with similar struggles regardless of time or place. Ultimately, these works will continue to serve as important reminders into future generations, inspiring those who come after us even today.
