The Hip Joint

The hip joint is a ball and socket synovial joint, formed by an articulation between the pelvic acetabulum and the head of the femur. The adult os coxae, or hip bone, is formed by the fusion of the ilium, the ischium, and the pubis, which occurs by the end of the teenage years. Normal hip range of motion is as follows: abduction: 0 to 45 degrees; adduction: 45 to 0 degrees; extension: 115 to 0 degrees. The hip is one of the most stable joints in the body. But because it bears your body weight, it is more likely to develop arthritis because of the extra pressure. Pain in the hip may be caused by injury to muscles, tendons, or the small fluid-filled sacs (bursae) that cushion and lubricate joints.
