Access to quality healthcare is a global issue that affects communities of all sizes across the globe. According to the World Bank, over one hundred million people are pushed into extreme poverty every year due to out-of-pocket healthcare expenses (1). In addition, far too often certain populations such as minorities and those living in rural areas do not have access to basic health care services. Improving access to quality healthcare around the world would lead to better overall health outcomes for patients, reduced costs for families and governments, and improved public safety.
The first step towards improving access to quality healthcare globally is identifying where there are gaps in care. This can involve collecting data about where disparities exist between populations or resources necessary for treating various illnesses (2). Once this information has been collected it can be used by policy makers at all levels of government from national leaders down through local community groups in order develop solutions that will provide equitable access to quality healthcare for all populations.
In order to ensure that everyone has access to quality healthcare regardless of their financial means or location, I propose implementing a Universal Healthcare System similar those used by other countries like Canada or the United Kingdom (3). Such a system would allow individuals the ability pay premiums on a sliding scale depending on income level while still receiving coverage at no additional cost beyond basic taxes paid by citizens. Additionally, primary care providers should receive support and compensation from federal funds so they could continue providing services without having worry about generating profit margins off their operations; this would also help prevent rural clinics from closing due lack lower patient numbers caused by limited access options or transportation means.
To lobby for my proposed policy, I would contact state Senator XXXX who serves on both he Senate Appropriations Committee as well as Health Subcommittee within it since she would likely have influence over the budgeting process with regard how much funding this type project might require (4). With her help we can work together to bring universal healthcare closer to reality so more people get the care they need when they need it most.
