The German army continued fighting even after it was obvious that Germany was going to lose the war due in part to its investment in primary groups. According to Dunphy (1959), a primary group is one “where human interaction and feelings of solidarity, loyalty and trust are strong” (p. 33). Such groups tend to create an environment where members feel empowered by their ability to identify with one another and by the bonds they form within their group.

In the case of the German army, these tight-knit relationships provided soldiers with a sense of purpose, identity and connection which encouraged them to remain loyal to their comrades despite knowing that losing the war was inevitable. Additionally, there was likely a sense of duty among many soldiers as many were taught from an early age that serving in the military was their patriotic obligation towards protecting their homeland; this further reinforced soldiers’ commitment towards ensuring victory for Germany even when defeat seemed certain.

Furthermore, those at higher ranks sought comfort from those below them which enabled them to continue motivating troops through any means possible such as rhetoric or rewards in order keep morale high amongst themselves and other members within each individual unit (Dunphy 1959). These strong ties between members also increased cohesion within units which ultimately helped maintain discipline amongst personnel during difficult times such as when facing seemingly unbeatable odds against enemy forces.
