Assessing and developing emerging technologies in accordance with ethical values and standards helps to foster their beneficial impact on society, avoid harm, and warrant public trust. Accordingly, a variety of approaches and tools have been devised on how to assess the societal and ethical impact of emerging technologies (examples include the concept of Responsible Research and innovation, Technology Assessment schemes). It has been argued that applying lists of ethics principles as part of ethics assessment procedures suffers from a number of drawbacks. It has been maintained, for example, that principles may come into conflict with each other, that these lists of principles lack theoretical unity and that they may reinforce a questionable box-ticking attitude towards ethical challenges (L. Floridi, 2019).
