The racial contract is a term used to describe the relationship between white people and non-white people in which power and privilege are distributed unequally. This concept can be applied to the “racial/technological contract” by recognizing that technology, like race, is shaped by existing power structures (Browne et al 2020). In order for certain technologies to be developed, maintained and made available certain groups must have access to resources such as capital or education, while other groups are excluded from these opportunities thus leading to disparities in access.

Furthermore, this unevenness results in a twofold situation; not only does it restrict some individuals from participating in technological progress but also reinforces racism by perpetuating stereotypes about certain ethnicities being more suited for manual labor than intellectual tasks (Kendrick et al 2018). Moreover many of our current digital devices were designed with white male users in mind which means they may not take into account cultural differences or physical impairments; making them less accessible or even unusable for some members of society (Ranganathan & Blevins 2016).

Ultimately, this demonstrates how the racial/technological contract operates similarly to its antecedent as both involve power imbalance and resource allocation. Recognizing that these issues exist within technological developments can help us work towards creating an equitable future where everyone has equal opportunity regardless of their background or identity.
