An action potential is defined as a sudden, fast, transitory, and propagating change of the resting membrane potential. Only neurons and muscle cells are capable of generating an action potential; that property is called the excitability. Voltage-gated sodium channels play an important role in action potentials. If enough channels open when there is a change in the cell`s membrane potential, a small but significant number of sodium ions will move into the cell down their electrochemical gradient, further depolarizing the cell. The sodium channels close at the peak of the action potential, while potassium continues to leave the cell.
