The “rose-coloured glasses” effect refers to the idea that individuals tend to view themselves and their environments in a positive light even when evidence suggests otherwise (Smith et al., 2020). Research indicates that this phenomenon is often part of our cognitive processes which helps us cope with challenging situations by providing us with a sense of hope or optimism (Brockner 1992).
However, there are different opinions among experts on whether these types of rose tinted views can be deemed as adaptive. On the one hand supporters argue that they may lead towards better outcomes since it helps motivate people towards achieving their goals while also shielding them from unnecessary stress; thus allowing them to stay focused (Csikszentmihalyi 1998).
Contrary to this position however, opponents claim that having overly positive expectations about oneself or one’s circumstances could result in an individual becoming blindsided should something unexpected occur leading towards negative consequences such as disappointment or anxiety (Baumeister & Bushman 2014). Furthermore, relying too heavily on such perspectives can also prevent proper problem solving by not taking into account any potential pitfalls associated with certain decisions.
Ultimately, it seems clear that much like anything else balance is key here. While having a pleasant outlook can certainly boost morale its important to remember that unbridled optimism may lead down dangerous paths if left unchecked. Thus its best for everyone involved if we all strive develop realistic expectations while maintaining positive mindsets so we may continue progressing without risking our own personal well-being.
