The Hunger Games is a novel by Suzanne Collins which serves as an example of how economic concepts can be illustrated through fiction. In this book the author explores the concept of scarcity in order to highlight the idea that resources are limited and people must compete for them. This is especially true in Panem, where each district must send two tributes (chosen from children) to compete in a televised fight-to-the-death known as “the hunger games” (Collins, 2008). Through this experience citizens are forced to confront the harsh reality that their actions will have consequences and there are no guarantees when it comes to survival.
Scarcity is also reflected within Katniss Everdeen’s journey throughout the novel as she struggles with making difficult decisions such as whether or not she should risk her life by participating in these dangerous games. These moments illustrate how individuals have to make tough choices due to limited options (Lane & Myatt, 2016). For instance, Katniss has to chose between staying home with her family or giving up her chance at freedom for another person even though both possibilities come with risks.
In addition, by emphasizing how essential selflessness is The Hunger Games shows readers that selfless behavior often leads greater good than selfishness. This theme directly links back one of Karl Marx‘s theories on capitalist society which suggests that people can only achieve true freedom by working together and sacrificing personal gain for collective success (Marx & Engels 1976 ). Overall, this book provides us with a vivid illustration of economic principles like scarcity and collective action.
