The Compromise of 1850 involved a series of laws that addressed various issues pertaining to state boundaries such as allowing California enter into Union without slavery or extending fugitive slave protection further north among other measures (Kornwiedl et al., 2018). However, even with these changes some states still felt threatened by potential spread of slavery so they proposed Kansas-Nebraska Act which allowed residents decide whether they wanted adopt prohibiting its presence through popular sovereignty (Holt 2020). Unfortunately this decision also caused sectionalism throughout country based on sentiments related to either side as too much power had been handed over to individuals who lived far away from original conflict.

Lastly, Supreme Court stepped in 1857 through their famous Dred Scott Decision ruling that African Americans could not become citizens under US law thus further solidifying rights afforded slave holders (Finkelman 2003).
