Attention and consciousness are two closely-related concepts in the field of neuroscience. The Attenuation Theory proposes that attention is controlled by a set of neural pathways which regulate how much information can be processed at any one time (Koch & Tsuchiya, 2007). This theory suggests that our brains have a “bottleneck” limiting the amount of information we can process consciously at once. In accordance with this idea, only certain stimuli will be able to pass through this bottleneck and enter conscious awareness (Fan et al., 2019).

The Bottleneck Theory proposes a similar concept but instead focuses on the edges of consciousness where incoming and outgoing resources become more difficult to control as one approaches their maximum capacity (Lau & Passingham, 2006). With this model, attention is seen as an active cognitive resource which must constantly be monitored or it will quickly become overwhelmed with stimuli entering conscious awareness while veering off track from its original focus.

Both theories agree on the notion that our minds have limited processing capabilities when it comes to attending to multiple tasks simultaneously; however they differ in their interpretation of how this limitation arises: through constriction by neural pathways or overuse of cognitive resources respectively. Thus far, results support both theories and further research is needed before firm conclusions can be made regarding each approach’s effectiveness in treating certain ailments such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) among others.

All things considered; despite some differences between these two frameworks ,both appear promising for understanding the complex relationship between attention and consciousness .
