Recently I had an opportunity to critically think about the issue of digital privacy. Prior to this I believed that it was up to the individual user to protect their own data and that companies were not responsible for any breaches as long as they provided consumers with a disclaimer. However, after further research and reflection on the matter I realized that this attitude assumed a level of technical expertise which not everyone possesses and also neglected important questions surrounding corporate accountability (Kendall 2017). This realization challenged my beliefs by forcing me to reconsider my position from a more holistic perspective taking into account various factors such as public ignorance or the potential misuse of information.

This process opened my eyes to nuances in the debate around digital privacy which I hadn’t considered before. It also made me aware of how our existing institutions can be lacking when it comes to protecting people’s rights online thus highlighting why regulation needs to be implemented in order for true equality among all users (Kendall 2017). Ultimately, this experience taught me how critical thinking can help us gain new insights while pushing us out of our comfort zones; helping us become better citizens who are able to engage more constructively with society.
