Headaches are a common medical complaint with numerous causes, ranging from tension to serious neurologic conditions. They can range in intensity from mild to severe and can be acute or chronic in nature. The pathophysiology of headaches is often related to the underlying cause. Common signs and symptoms include throbbing head pain, nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light or sound, sharp pains in one area of the head (migraine), tension-type headaches that feel like band pressure around the head (tension) , and scalp tenderness (Clauw et al., 2017).
The diagnosis for headaches usually involve obtaining a detailed history as well as physical examination by a physician. If further investigation is needed imaging such as CT scans or MRI scans may be performed . Neurologic testing may also be done if suspicion increased intracranial pressure .
