Highly unethical research in the 20th century (e.g., Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment, Nazi Experimentation) resulted in the development of research
ethical principles and laws and regulations of research.
Research some of the following Research Ethics Case Studies and choose one to discuss and identify which code(s) were violated in the case study
(at least 2 of them). Write a brief report addressing the following in three different paragraphs:
Paragraph 1) Very briefly summarize the case study. Cite the source from where your information comes from;
Paragraph 2) Select a health profession and research the code of ethics of your chosen profession. In the second paragraph you will write about at
least two codes violated in the case study and state which specific actions in the case study violated the code(s). Cite the source of the Code of
Ethics;
Paragraph 3) discuss the actions that made the study unethical. The best approach is to show how the actions identified violated one or more of the
three principles identified in the Belmont Report; how clear the relationship between the Code of Ethics of your chosen profession and the three
ethical principles in the Belmont Report will vary from Code to Code, but these principles are used in all Codes of Ethics. Another approach to show
you understand how the three principles were violated is suggesting ways to change the research in the case study, so it is ethical: beware that
sometimes it is impossible to make them ethical.
Give a title to your mini paper and list at all the references used at the end. Remember to cite any sources used. DO NOT use a title page or abstract.
You can pick any of the following unethical studies or find one on your own:
Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment
Willowbrook Study
South Africa Aversion
Project Statesville Penitentiary
Malaria Study
