These new arrivals had a significant impact on the shaping of America during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
One example can be seen with the Irish immigrants who arrived in large numbers after 1846 due to famine back home. Although most were poor, many were able to find work as unskilled laborers where they contributed significantly to industrialization by providing labor for coal mining, railroad building, manufacturing, garment construction, etc. Additionally these immigrants helped create vibrant urban communities filled with lively music & dance halls that served as cultural hubs for newly arrived Europeans (Grundy & Miller 2018).
