Helmets are required at all levels of organized men’s lacrosse, but only required for goalies in women’s lacrosse. According to US Lacrosse, no headgear or helmet in any sport has been proven to prevent concussions, which includes lacrosse. Due to the fact that only some girls would wear helmets, head to head collisions would become more dangerous to those not wearing them. Allowing helmets in girls’ lacrosse promotes violence because girls believe they can be more aggressive towards the other players. Girls without helmets are more susceptible to injuries from that violent play promoted by the helmets. Here is the thing, those who are arguing against the use of helmets are doing so because they also want to keep the players safe. Nancy Burke, a retired athletic trainer who specializes in injury avoidance says that helmets will not prevent concussions. US Lacrosse is currently funding a study to address the bigger question, if the headgear reduce concussions.
