The basic principle of the golden mean, laid down by Aristotle 2,500 years ago is moderation, or striving for a balance between extremes. The golden mean focuses on the middle ground between two extremes, but as Aristotle suggests, the middle ground is usually closer to one extreme than the other. For example, in the case of courage, the extremes might be recklessness and cowardice. So, Aristotle advises, a good principle “in aiming at the mean is to avoid that extreme which is the more opposed to the mean.” In other words: to be safe when calculating the right course of action in any given situation, lean into the ‘less bad’ side of the equation.

Standardized test are usually helpful to analyze age appropriate specific hearing and visual loss problems found on the neurologic evaluation; to evaluate nerve and muscle functions further; or to quantitatively characterize developmental language disorders or dyslexia.
