The three primary sources reveal the three different perspectives of Angelina Grimke, Catharine Beecher, and Sojourner Truth on women’s rights. In her letter published in The Liberator, Grimke expresses her belief that women should have the right to vote and be educated in order to be able to properly engage with their natural right to freedom (Grimke, 1838). She advocates for female empowerment through education and knowledge so they can assert their power in society. On the other hand, Beecher believes that a woman’s authority is best served within the home; she encourages them to take part in domestic activities such as sewing or teaching as a way of asserting power domestically (Beecher, 1837). Finally, Truth also acknowledges the importance of women rallying together but does not shy away from criticizing those who remain inactive or even hinder social progress by failing to recognize intersectional oppression (Truth, 1897).
Sojourner Truth’s speech “Ain’t I A Woman?” stands out among Angelina Grimke’s letter and Beecher’s essay as it brings attention to intersectional issues concerning inequality between white and black women. Contrary to both Grimke and Beecher who address mainly upper-class white women in their works respectively, Truth acknowledges that any fight for equality must include all marginalized groups regardless of race or class status. All three primary sources agree however that female solidarity is essential when striving towards making real social change.
