Three things I learned from this article are (1) the importance of creating an environment that both challenges and encourages developmentally disabled individuals to push their boundaries while also providing support to help them reach their goals; (2) addressing the physical, mental, social and emotional needs of people with developmental disabilities — including those related to communication and learning — is essential in helping these individuals achieve personal success; and (3) being cognizant of participants’ quality-of-life issues, such as loneliness or discrimination due to disability status, can help social workers address potential problems they may face when attempting to access treatment or other services.
B. This article has impacted me as a future social worker or human services worker by reminding me just how important it is for us professionals working with this population ensure our clients have the resources necessary for meeting their goals. This includes not only providing them with adequate assistance during treatment sessions but also making sure all conditions are amenable for achieving positive outcomes outside of therapy.
I have been reminded that we must always strive towards empowering our clients through recognizing their strengths and offering appropriate support, whether that be through technical advice on proper activity participation or advocating on their behalf when needed. Doing so will allow us create an atmosphere wherein everyone involved feels respected while still allowing challenging activities take place.
Furthermore, simply being aware of all potential obstacles my clients might encounter — such as accessibility issues or emotional distress caused by stigma—can make a huge difference in both ensuring successful engagement during treatment sessions as well as helping these individuals become more confident about themselves overall so they don\’t feel limited by any particular condition(s).
Overall then, reading this article gave me insight into the best practices for supporting developmentally disabled individuals: it taught me the need for balance between finding ways appropriately challenge my clientele yet provide adequate support when necessary if I really want to see them succeed in life beyond therapy.
