Discussion – Health Focus for the Future
For our last discussion of semester, let us take a look at the areas of health that we, as a society, should continue to make a priority. Recent data tells us that although the United States spends more than 17% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) on health care, Americans are less healthy and are dying younger than residents of other developed nations (Gunja, Gumas & Williams, 2023). If money is not necessarily the issue, then why are Americans lagging behind in health?
Select a health issue that you are particularly concerned about (ex. diabetes, cancer).
Explain why this issue is concerning and should be prioritized (In your response consider things like, how many people are affected by the issue, how damaging the condition is, what are the consequences of the health issue going untreated, etc. to justify your selection).
To what degree is this health problem modifiable (people can change through specific behaviors)? Provide an example of a behavior that can be changed to help alleviate the issue.
What do you see as the biggest obstacles in correcting the health issue? Identify at least two (2) factors
Health Issue: Obesity
Obesity is a major health issue in the United States, with over 42% of adults classified as obese. This epidemic has significant consequences for individuals and society as a whole, including increased risk of chronic diseases, higher healthcare costs, and decreased quality of life.
Why Obesity is Concerning and Should be Prioritized
Obesity is a leading risk factor for several chronic diseases, including heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer. These diseases are not only debilitating but also costly, accounting for a significant portion of the nation’s healthcare expenditures. Obesity also contributes to increased disability and premature death. In 2020, obesity was a contributing factor to over 450,000 deaths in the United States.
The consequences of obesity extend beyond the individual to impact society as a whole. The economic burden of obesity is substantial, with estimated annual costs exceeding $300 billion. This includes direct costs related to medical treatment, as well as indirect costs associated with lost productivity, absenteeism, and disability. Obesity also contributes to increased healthcare utilization, placing additional strain on the healthcare system.
Modifiability of Obesity
Obesity is a modifiable condition, meaning that individuals can take steps to reduce their weight and improve their overall health. Lifestyle changes, such as adopting a healthy diet and increasing physical activity, are the most effective strategies for managing obesity.
Obstacles in Correcting Obesity
Despite the availability of effective weight management strategies, addressing the obesity epidemic remains a complex challenge. Several factors contribute to the persistence of obesity:
Addressing the Obesity Epidemic
Addressing the obesity epidemic requires a multifaceted approach that tackles the issue from various angles:
In conclusion, obesity is a major public health concern with significant consequences for individuals and society as a whole. While addressing the obesity epidemic is a complex challenge, a multifaceted approach that focuses on public health initiatives, community-based interventions, policy changes, healthcare provider education, and addressing socioeconomic disparities can help promote healthier behaviors and reduce the burden of obesity. By creating a supportive environment for healthy living, we can empower individuals to make positive changes and improve overall health outcomes.
