I chose Sojourner Truth as my noteworthy woman of the 19th century because of her incredible contributions to the abolitionist and women’s rights movements. She was a powerful speaker and advocate for social justice, and her story is one of courage, perseverance, and hope.

Truth was born into slavery in New York in 1797. She escaped from slavery in 1826 and later sued her former owner for the return of her son. She won the case, becoming the first black woman in New York to win a lawsuit against a white man.
